What smart film is.

Smart film — also called PDLC film — is a technical sheet applied to glass. It holds a layer of liquid crystals between two transparent electrodes.

With no power, the liquid crystals are randomly oriented: they scatter light and the surface looks opaque. Under power, they align: light passes through and the surface becomes clear again. The change of state is immediate and reversible.

Self-adhesive or laminated smart film

Self-adhesive smart film is applied to glass that is already installed. The laminated version is integrated into a laminated glass unit at the factory. The choice depends on the condition of the glazing, its exposure and the site context.
